Arthrosurface ("mini" replacement)

In the event that only a very small area of the knee is worn to exposed bone, smaller replacement components have been developed. Arthrosurface is the first company to introduce what might be termed a “mini” replacement. These are small (dime-sized) metal and plastic components that are fitted into small focal areas of damaged cartilage. In theory, the disturbance to normal joint architecture is minimized, which should be the goal of any surgical procedure. The surgical exposure, however, is similar to that of a partial knee replacement. Long term outcomes of this procedure remains to be determined.
