Resection/ Meniscectomy

Background and Rationale

Small or degenerative tears in the avascular portion of the cartilage have little chance of healing. These are generally resected as shown below.


A simple arthroscopic peocedure taking 20 to 40 minutes. Instruments are used to clip the unstable fragment and the remaining edge is smooth to a stable contour.


This is done as an outpatient procedure. Crutches are often used just for balance but unassisted weight bearing is usually achieved within a few days. Swelling persisted for 2 weeks. PT is preferable to expedite the recovery. Full recovery is 4 to 8 weeks.
